QUWF Chapters Place 23 Tons of Wildlife Seed in East Coast Habitat

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Buffalo, MO: True to the very core of what the Quail and Upland Wildlife Federation, Inc. (QUWF), is all about, “turning the dirt™”, working with the local private landowners who are the true stewards of wildlife habitat across this nation, getting them habitat seed and supplies is critical. “As we have stated so many times, nothing happens in wildlife habitat work unless someone turns some dirt. Our private landowners, even in these very, very tough times, are supported by our chapter and member’s efforts to help get them conservation seed, even help in delivery, and get it in the ground” reflects Craig Alderman of QUWF. “8 tons in Virginia, and 23 tons in North Carolina in 2021 and they have already begun delivery for 2022” Craig states. “Again, this is who we are, not corporate structure or process before the landowner, which does not help the resource, but on the ground success with private landowners first” Alderman points out.. This does not include the QUWF Bulk Seed Program of tractor trailer loads when available, shipped all over the country.

“The seed includes black oil sunflower, milo, brown top millet, Japanese millet, buckwheat, clover, wheat and a deer plot mix. Our first loads of 2022 have already been delivered” Says Bill Cowan of the local chapter. Many of the seed destinations are also for youth hunts in the fall co-sponsored by the landowners and chapters. Species benefiting are bob white quail, dove, turkey, deer, and about every upland game specie on the lands.

“Any seed acquisition this year is tough because of the economy, weather impacts, fuel prices, sky high fertilizer, equipment parts shortages and the big issue of logistics. The seed just is not out there, especially wheat or oats as a cover planting.” said Nick Prough Chief Wildlife Biologist with QUWF. QUWF normally plants 5 fields for Youth fall hunts on its home office property in Missouri, but this year due to excessive costs and some companies declining grants for youth support programs, we have had to cut back to 3, so far.
